   Purchased two years ago and had not used until the other day when it was used to charge a friend’s battery. Charged OK but friend reported that it did not automatically turn off and go to green as I told him it should. I then tested with my car battery which is only one year old and has never needed manual charging. Monitored by connecting external ammeter and taking periodic photos to understand what the charger was doing but was still not satisfied that I understood whether the charger was defective or just not working as advertised. 1) The indicating lights are very poor as you have to look straight at them to tell which one(s) are on. 2) There is no ammeter so, even as an electrical engineer, I couldn’t tell what the charger was doing. 3) Does not auto-switch from 10-amp mode to Charge / Maintain (6 -2 amp) mode when fully charged. 4) Limited charging current to 1.5 amp in “Charge-Maintain (2-6 amp mode)” and falsely reported that battery cables were reversed or battery was bad. (See two Photos) 5) Does not auto-switch from Charge/Maintain to 10-amp mode when I turned the headlights on bright. 6) In 10-amp mode, limits charging current to about 7 amps even though battery draw is higher. Called tech support on March 16, 2021 and Jennifer escalated call to a higher level of tech support. However, went back to voice mail jungle to another entry level support agent who again escalated. I was then on hold for 60 minutes before my call was automatically disconnected, without talking to anyone, at 4:12 pm CST even though tech support hours didn’t end until 4:30 CST Mon-Fri instead of 5 pm as stated in manual. I will never know whether this charger is defective or just poorly designed.    So I got this battery charger for my old Cadillac, wouldn’t start, darn it, trickle won’t work.

   Got this thing, hooker up for 24 hours, Cadillac starts like nothing. It’s worth what you pay for it, want something with all the bells and whistles, you gonna pay 3x more…. but if you’re not using one all the time, this is more than good enough. Will last a long time, I’ve no doubt.

   That said, for me, was a reminder to check up on Michael Shumacher the race car driver…. hope he gets better and recover, sooner than later.

   When I bought it, I thought Shumacher, they make a good charger. This one sounded like it would do just fine. I had this thing for maybe ten months but only used it like four times. When I went to use it on Monday, I found no output on it. Then the negative terminal fell off. I saw that it was crimped bare metal wire to the terminal, not to the insulation and held in place with a screw the way it was designed to be. That meant there was no strain relief on the cord, and with a tiny bit of metal fatigue from using it four times that wimpy wire fell apart. This left the device 100% not operational. Please see the picture of the negative clamp above. You can see the broken wire. You can also see that the clamp was filthy on the inside, like they had stored it under the ocean or something. It was amazingly nasty. Flat out, I was gobsmacked astounded. The fact that the fix was simple – clean the terminal, grab the right size bolt and nut from the junk jar, strip it back, make a terminal lug, tighten it down, and put proper insulation on it – was beside the point. This thing failed, leaving me stranded until I did surgery on it. That’s unacceptable even to someone who knows what they are doing and doubly unacceptable to someone who isn’t used to taking stuff apart and fixing it. By the way, the engine starter setting doesn’t. Flat out, too wimpy, at least for a Ford F-150. Maybe it will work on a Fiat 500, I don’t know. Those wires aren’t anywhere near thick enough to hold 50 amps though. They measure like 12 amp rated 14 gauge wire, definitely no bigger than 12 gauge 20 amp wire. I was expecting wire for a 50 amp rated charger to be 50 amp rated wire like 6 gauge, but no way that wire could do a steady 50 amp load without burning up.

   Im not sure if I got a faulty or returned item with this order but as I tried to use it, none of the lights turned on (was charging a normal 12v battery), then all of a sudden it starts making a loud noise which was actually quite concerning so i unplugged it. I tried again and same thing, the light turns on then back off, with no light on – but it still making that loud sound and seems like it is malfunctioning as the battery seems to be getting worse. If the producer sees this I would like some product support please. Or if this happened to anyone else please let me know!

    It has a great trickle charger. Don’t expect it to be a battery maintainer. It turns off after the battery is charged.

    I purchased this to boost or hot start a car or truck that has a dead battery. The major problem with this charger is that the clamp clips are designed to fit the battery posts only. They ARE NOT designed large enough to fit over an electrical cable attached to the battery posts/terminals. Therefore, the hot start aspect of this charger is muted. You could attach the charging clamps to a bolt coming off the electrical cable but you’ll cut the charge by half or more. This is a poor design and for $80, I’ll likely send this back as it does not meet expectations. Keep shopping g for something with clamps that open wider. Hope the pic helps.
