   I recently had a dead battery as well as a blown tire and when I saw this on the Vine I was really excited. Some of the previous reviews made me nervous so my dad husband and I used it on an old battery that was almost drained rather than wait for my car battery (or theirs) to die again and perhaps be crap out of luck.

   It’s small and the cord is really short. So note to self you need to have an extension cord. In addition this is NOT fully weather proof so if you car dies in the rain, snow etc you’re out of luck. Make sure you also get it for the proper battery power otherwise you’ll be out of luck. For a quick charge or broken down on the side of the road I’m not sure if this is the best. You may be able to get a boost home if you charge it for a bit, but as others have mentioned you do need close to 24 hours to charge a mostly or fully dead battery. The product itself also isn’t intuitive and if we hadn’t had my dad there (who has multiple chargers and gadgets) this wouldn’t have been near as seamless. I’ll update if there’s anything else or if the unit stops working.

   Update: Lowering to two stars. With my car parked during the pandemic the battery drained to 11.7v sitting in the driveway. I hooked up this charger and let it charge at 10A for more than 24 hours. But the battery still read 11.7v. After that I also tried the 55A setting. During the charging process the voltage fluctuated from 14v to 10v back and forth and I could hear the buzzing sound of the charger switching on and off during this voltage change. Neither the 10A nor the 55A setting made any difference to go beyond 11.7v. I was thinking maybe I had to buy a new battery. Then finally I turned on the engine, let it idle for an hour, and drove it for another hour for charging with the alternator. I saw a gradual rise in the voltage immediately with use of the alternator, and now it’s back to 12.6v while parked. The alternator achieved in two hours what this charger could not do given more than 24 hours. I recognize that It is possible that the charger did some of the prep work and the alternator put in the final juice, but I highly doubt it because the unhooked voltage didn’t change at all with use of the charger. I have used this charger to jump start cars on the 55A setting and it seems that’s all it is good for — jump starting. I just purchased a CTEK (56-353) MULTI US 7002 12-Volt Battery Charger to replace the Schumacher. The CTEK doesn’t cost that much more and is highly recommended by professionals. Original review: This charger feels more substantial and heavier than I was expecting based on the product photos. It has a quality, rugged feel (maybe because it is Made in Mexico and not China). When my battery was dead on my V8 this started it right away. This has 10A charging, float/maintenance mode charging, and engine jump start. The cord is just a few feet long so you will most likely always need to use an extension cord with this. When you’ve connected the clamps, press the button to start charging. Or it will start charging by itself within 10 minutes of detecting the connection. I guess this is a safety feature in case you plug it to the AC outlet while the charger clamps are touching each other. I like this feature, less to worry about when you’re in a hurry. The only thing I don’t like is that this is not weather resistant. The top cover has vent holes that expose the transformer and circuit board to rain. If it happened to be raining heavily when the car needs a boost, it would be tricky to use this charger/starter.
