   Upon receiving the charger I connected it to a partially discharged battery. I placed a Fluke multimeter in the battery circuit set to the 10 Amp range to monitor charge current. I followed the steps to begin charging. When the charger began, the current through the battery hovered around 1.8 Amps. I assume this is some sort of pre-charge mode. After about 5 minutes it went up to about 6 Amps. It stayed in that general range for about 2 hours. After that, the green “charged” light came on. At that time the current dropped to zero. Waited about half an hour to see if it would apply a “maintaining” charge, but it never did. It’s possible that waiting longer would have revealed the maintain mode. In the literature and on ezysurvival.com, it gives the charging spec as “15A rapid charge, 8A to charge, and 3A to maintain.” At no point did the charger put out more than 6.8 Amps. Possibly the battery wasn’t as low as I thought. But I would expect to see 8 Amps for a partially charged battery. Furthermore, the charger does not have a way to set the charging current manually. You can only select 2 charge-rate settings: lower for “power-sports” (smaller) batteries, and a second for larger automotive/marine batteries. The charger presumably sets the charging current based on the size/type battery and state of charge. The only other button on the charger is for selecting the chemistry type of battery; STD for typical lead-acid auto batteries. AGM for absorbed glass mat batteries. GEL for gel call type batteries. There is no “start” button, the charger starts automatically after connecting it and setting the battery type & size (charge rate). In summary, the charger did completely charge the battery, albeit not at the expected rate. Disappointing that there is limited manual user control, it requires some trust that the charger’s automatic mode is effective and safe. it seemed to work as designed and nothing bad (boil-over, etc) happened.

   Compared to older designs (that would often kill your battery by overcharging), this model is sweet… Larger units can do an express charge faster, but then their price point is higher. Recommended for use by a home owner or amateur mechanic, and with features belonging to units that are much more expensive, easy/affordable to justify having, to keep in reserve… Follow-up [October 2016]: Schumacher has changed this model from the SC-1200A that I bought [and reviewed]. My recommendation and review is NOT for the SC-1200A-CA despite what the review title may say. My original review and 5-star rating applies to original model, not the new one. One of the reasons I got the original charger was its ability to safely handle gel batteries [like those used in UPS units, generator, etc.] – current model cannot handle those batteries, and in my case, I would drop to a 2-star rating for that omission. My current feeling is to drop rating to 1-star – current unit has much less flexibility in control. See attached photo and compare controls with current unit. Other, more expensive Schumacher units (that I cannot comment on) may be able to duplicate functionality of my 1200A…

   This is a great small portable charger for RV batteries and automotive batteries. Its nice to see the charge level and voltage of the batteries, this unit does what I need and recommend it to anyone who needs a battery charger for automotive and RV batteries. So far it’s been great.

   I’ve been using old charger for 10 years. Finally it stop working. This charger is VERY light weight and easy to use. Also, Digital display showing how much percentage battery has is very useful before charge and during charge. I have 2 trickle chargers and 2 jump starters (portable battery ?) for 3 cars and 1 motorcycle, I don’t need Start function but someone who like to charge dead (0%) battery or want immediate jump start car, this may not fit to your needs. Also, this is nothing bothers me but * Picture of product shows 12, 8, 2 A but actual product we receive is 12 and 3A * Picture shows Standard, AGM, Gel Cell but actural product we receive is STD or AGM * Picture shows Display mode button but actual product we receive is no user choice for display Charger cycle display V and % automatically, you have to wait for charger shows whichever you want to see. Usually it start with Voltage I wait for few seconds (10-15 seconds?) till it shows how much percentage battery has. It goes dim (power saver mode ?) after few minutes, you need to hit one of button then display shows V and % cycling.

   The SC1360 battery charger is a great little charger that boasts 15A quick charge and 8A standard and 3A float modes. The instructions are mediocre. I added my own gold on black labels shown in the pictures to clarify its use. Asterisk or snowflake is for placing fully charged batteries in maintenance (float) mode or for charging small batteries lick tractors and motorcycles. The boat icon is for Large batteries like automobile, light truck and marine batteries. The charger is great for charging AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries found in newer cars. Also has a STD setting for standard lead acid batteries found in most cars. GEL setting is for deep cycle GEL cell batteries. Connect the charger and once the battery type (STD, AGM, GEL) and charge rate (Maintain/small or Large/Auto/Marine) are set, the battery automatically tests the battery and begins charging. Once fully charged it will switch automatically to the Float mode and the battery icon will be lit. All lights and display switch off after a few minutes, although the charger is still working. Press any button to again see the display. Press the battery type button once to use the unit as a voltage tester. The charger can detect a sulfated battery, display SUL and automatically goes into defulfation mode. I was able to charge an almost completely dead AGM battery on my son’s 2017 Camero. I bought the charger after the Camero wouldn’t start. The battery charger displayed bAd bAt. Although the battery was perfectly fine the month before, the car had been sitting in the driveway while my son was deployed to Iraq. Turns out starting the car once a month and driving the car a few miles doesn’t maintain AGM batteries. I connected the Camero in parallel with the good battery on my car and connected the charger and placed in AGM & Large Battery modes. It then proceeded to properly charge the Camero battery. After a day, disconnected the cables and both cars started just fine. Kept the Camero connected to the SC1360 for another 2 months in maintain mode until my son returned and collected his car. Once you figure out what the 2 buttons do, it is a great charger.
